Chasing Rainbows
from The Arts House Trust collection

Until 13 September 2026 | The Morrinsville Gallery

Celebrating and investigating the captivating spectrum of colour in contemporary art

Chasing Rainbows presents a selection of works from The Arts House Trust Collection brings together diverse artistic perspectives, the exhibition explores how colour can communicate emotion, convey meaning, and shape our experience of the world.

Throughout history, the rainbow has carried a rich array of cultural, spiritual, and symbolic associations. In many ancient traditions, it was understood as a bridge between the earthly and the divine, a sign of covenant, protection, or transformation. Across different cultures and time periods, the rainbow has represented hope, renewal, harmony, and the promise of brighter futures. Its enduring presence in mythology, religion, and visual culture reflects humanity’s fascination with both its fleeting beauty and its profound symbolism.

In contemporary society, the rainbow has become most widely recognised as a symbol of Pride, representing diversity, inclusion, visibility, and solidarity within LGBTQIA+ communities around the world. As a powerful emblem of unity across difference, it continues to inspire conversations about identity, belonging, and social progress.

By bringing these works together, the exhibition invites audiences to consider the emotional resonance and symbolic significance of colour in their own lives. Chasing Rainbows encourages reflection on how colour shapes our perceptions, influences our emotions, and connects us to shared experiences, while celebrating the creativity, diversity, and richness of contemporary artistic practice in Aotearoa.
