Rivers - Metaphor for a Journey

Professional Weavers Network of New Zealand

2 June - 5 July 2026 |  Awatea & Whakaaturanga Galleries

Exhibition Opening Event:  Sunday 7 June at 1pm

The Professional Weavers Network of New Zealand (Incorporated) whose aim is to further the art of weaving through the pursuit of excellence and the promotion of handwoven textiles, presents its exhibition ‘Rivers: Metaphor for a Journey’.

Since the Network’s inception in 1991, regular exhibitions have been held which have travelled the country.  Following its successful exhibition “Ngahere: The Bush of Aotearoa”, a dedicated team of people have worked hard to bring together artwork from some of New Zealand’s leading handweavers.

Rivers symbolise vitality, fertility and the cycle of life.  They naturally flow and change over time, symbolizing the passage of time and the transformative nature of life.

The exhibition gives an insight into how the weaver interprets the theme of how rivers impact the world, how the world impacts rivers, how they change the landscape, or how they impact our lives, and the lives of wildlife who live in and near the water.  Each work in this exhibition is personal to the weaver.

It is an exhibition rich with layers where threads, paths and textures echo life’s twists and turns.  You will step into a world woven with meaning.
